Anger over bluefin tuna decision
نویسنده
چکیده
The Atlantic bluefin tuna fishery, one of the most prized and lucrative, is increasingly threatened with collapse, according to scientists, after the regulatory body established to maintain the fishery has again recommended a quota for the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean population at a level that many scientists and conservationists believe is unsustainable. The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tuna (ICCAT) voted last month at a meeting in Marrakech for a quota of 22,000 tonnes to be caught in the Mediterranean and eastern Atlantic next year, a reduction of 6,500 tonnes from this year's quota. It will be cut to 19,950 tonnes in 2010. However, its scientific advisers had previously advised the maximum sustainable catch was only 15,500 tonnes. The commission, representing the 46 main fishing nations, also rejected scientific advice to close fragile spawning areas in May and June. The discussions were noted for allegations that the European Union had threatened developing states with trade retaliations if they supported lower catch limits and extended closed seasons. The wildlife charity WWF said that the European Union was the main backer of the new quota, with the Brazil in supporting a limit of 15,000 tonnes. " This is not a decision, it's a disgrace, " said Sergi Tudela, head of the WWF's Mediterranean fisheries programme. Greenpeace called the vote disastrous and shameful. " The European Union, representing the majority of Mediterranean countries with interests in the bluefin tuna fishery, has bullied other parties in the meeting into agreeing to management proposals that completely fail to follow the advice of ICCAT's own scientific The quota set last month for catching bluefin tuna in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean next year has infuriated scientists and conservationists who believe the stocks face collapse. Nigel Williams reports. Threatened: Scientists and conservationists believe a moratorium is needed to protect rapidly dwindling bluefin tuna stocks but fishing will continue.

Origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Bay of Biscay
Weused carbon and oxygen isotope ratios (dC and dO) in otoliths as a tool for identifying the nursery origin of Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) caught in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean (Bay of Biscay). Juvenile and adult bluefin tuna were collected over three consecutive years (2009—2011) using the regional bait boat fleet. Otolith dC and dO values of bluefin tuna were measured by mas...
متن کاملInfluence of swimming speed on metabolic rates of juvenile pacific bluefin tuna and yellowfin tuna.
Bluefin tuna are endothermic and have higher temperatures, heart rates, and cardiac outputs than tropical tuna. We hypothesized that the increased cardiovascular capacity to deliver oxygen in bluefin may be associated with the evolution of higher metabolic rates. This study measured the oxygen consumption of juvenile Pacific bluefin Thunnus orientalis and yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares swimmi...
متن کاملChanges in the Distribution of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) in the Gulf of Maine 1979-2005
The Gulf of Maine, NW Atlantic Ocean, is a productive, seasonal foraging ground for Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus), but commercial landings of adult size classes were up to 40% below the allocated total allowable catch between 2004 to 2008 for the rod and reel, harpoon, and purse seine categories in the Gulf of Maine. Reduction in Atlantic bluefin tuna catches in the Gulf of Maine coul...
متن کاملTuna Species Substitution in the Spanish Commercial Chain: A Knock-On Effect
Intentional mislabelling of seafood is a widespread problem, particularly with high-value species like tuna. In this study we examine tuna mislabelling, deliberate species substitution, types of substitution and its impact on prices. The survey covered the commercial chain, from Merca-Barna to fishmongers and restaurants in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Catalonia. To understand the geogra...
متن کاملAtlantic Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) Diet in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and on the Eastern Scotian Shelf
The stomach contents of 68 Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) landed in Port Hood and Canso, Nova Scotia, in 2010, were analyzed to characterize the diet of bluefin tuna at the two locations. Of the sampled fish, 54 stomachs had contents. Pelagic schooling fish such as herring (Clupea harengus) and mackerel (Scomber scombrus) dominated the diets in both regions. However, a number of rare s...
